The W's Last year they stormed the market with a debut CD, a fresh sound, and record setting sales. The successful debut CD, Fourth from the Last, earned two Dove Awards, became the highest selling debut album in the history of EMI Christian Group and landed the W's a spot on dc Talk's Supernatural tour. But now the W's are back with their sophomore release, Trouble With X. The first thing you'll notice is that the W's refuse to be pinned down to a certain style. Songs on the album range in style from old school swing to country to punk to blues to jazz. Don't ask how, but they do manage to include all those styles. If you liked the last album, it's no guarantee you'll like this one. The last album had a cohesive sound, while this one is all over the place. If you don't like the first song on the album, try the second, or the third, or the fourth Overall the album shows a band trying to diversify and find their niche. At this point they obviously haven't settled on one yet, and maybe they won't. But it is fun listening to them try. The music is tight and well produced (thanks again to producer Masaki). Andrew's character crooner voice is still there, adding a hint of the ridiculous to songs about used car salesmen and college all nighters. It's a little hard to pick a best song on the album, seeing as it all depends on which style you like best. The cover of John Denver's 'Country Roads' will light up the eyes of those who recognize the song. 'Tip from Me' is an attractive song with a very driving beat and catchy horn arrangements. 'The Rumor Weed Song' is also a nice bonus from the newest Veggie Tales release. The best advice for this album is to listen before you buy--listen to the whole thing. (Kevin H.) |
