Brenda Weiler Live is exactly that. It captures the intimate, personal, and stunning aspects of folk-singer Brenda Weiler's live shows. You could easily close your eyes, sip your coffee, and imagine Weiler singing from the other side of the room. Most of the songs are stripped down to Weiler and her acoustic guitar, with some guitar accompaniment from Darren Jackson (Kid Dakota). The sound is reminiscent of her stripped down earlier work, but the simpler versions of songs from Fly Me Back are just as captivating. The sound of the recording is impressive, so much so you forget it's a live recording until you hear the audience cheering. It's well-balanced, and her rich voice is able to carry each song. Weiler wrestles with the weighty things of life with a surprising wisdom and poetry. She's the kind of artist that makes local music the gold mine it is. With 16 tracks (and the last track is actually an unreleased studio song, followed by two live extras) this disc is well worth the money. It features a good mix of songs from her past few albums, as well as several songs Weiler hasn't recorded before. Live serves as an introduction to her music for new fans, as well as providing a more intimate experience for old fans. (Kevin H.) |
