The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales

Viking Books

This slightly cracked book is a must have for the quirky individual who likes an irreverent take on the classics. They've re-written fairy tales to be so stupidly outrageous you can't help but laugh. The utterly original wackiness is only matched by the unique artistry and beauty of the illustration.

Jack, the fairy tale hero of such classics as Jack and Jill, Jack Porter, and Jack and the Beanstalk, narrates through ten fairy tale retakes including "The Boy Who Cried 'Cow Patty,'" "The Really Ugly Duckling," and "The Princess and the Bowling Ball."

Just how bizarre are these tales? When Chicken Licken is crying that the sky is falling, the table of contents falls instead, squashing everyone and ending the story. When the princess kisses the frog who claims royalty, the frog says "I was just kidding" and hops away. There's even a blank page when Jack the narrator gives away the ending to "Little Red Running Shorts" and the Wolf and Little Red storm off.

If you thought Shrek was an irreverent fairy tale spin, The Stinky Cheese Man has been there and done that. As the inside jacket declares, "New! Improved! Funny! Good! Buy! Now!" What more can I say?
