Tool's Maynard James Keenan Finds Jesus

Maybe. MTV reports that Maynard James Keenan, frontman for the heavy-metal band Tool, has found Jesus. According to posts on the band's web site and an e-mail from Keenan himself, he's turned to Christ and seems to be opting out of his band, similar to the departure of Brian "Head" Welch from Korn in February.

Or it's an April Fool's joke. The band is known for posting jokes on their site for April Fool's, and the initial announcement on the site appeared on March 31. MTV News' Kurt Loder e-mailed Keenan for confirmation yesterday afternoon, and Keenan e-mailed back: "I did, in fact, find Jesus. More news to follow. God bless ya."

If it is a joke, which seems likely, it's sad to see mainstream rockers ridiculing conversion. But quite frankly, they're ridiculing something they don't understand. If they were that secure with their own beliefs they wouldn't need to poke fun at others.

If it's true, if Keenan has become a Christian, then perhaps we're seeing a revival of sorts sweeping through the most unlikely of places. Which, if you think about it, is exactly where a revival should happen.

Update: MTV updates their story by checking with Keenan again and asking if he was joking. His response? "Heh heh."

I'm guessing "heh heh" was meant to be intoned like that kid from The Simpsons, right?

Not surprising. The dramatic conversion of Brian "Head" Welch had me wondering if that too wasn't a farse, originally. And Welch's affiliation with Stephen Baldwin and their cheesy plans to start a Christian clothing line? Well, that's disappointing. I'm not surprised one of Welch's hard-rocking friends from his past life would take a jab at him like this.

I hope those who are discipling Welch don't take him completely out of the world that he came from -- that would completely neuter his witness and testimony. He has a platform still to speak into those people's lives (MTV publicizes everything he's saying!), but he won't for very long if he dives too far into the Christian subculture. He needs to stay in relationship with his non-Christian friends and not get "holier than thou." And maybe have more private conversations and fewer "shout outs" to 50 Cent and the like. (Sigh.)

None of you know anything, including the writer of the originaly introspect on what he thought was "news" first off, Brian "Head" Welch was not freinds with Maynard, second off, Maynard has played a joke 3 years in a row, and to say that he is insecure by poking at him is completely moronic. gain morals, beleifs and ideas. gain individuality.
the only one worth veiwing was the " i hope it isnt true" get your factss traight before you ridicule, idiot.
may SATAN save you.

It's true. Maynard's lyrics are completely Christian. I'm a master of divinity student and I've been a TOOL fan since 96. I also played in a TOOL cover band for a while. Maynard is an amazing man. Lateralis was more Christian than Aenema, and now 10,000 days is certainly Christian. The whole album just feels Christian, full of repentance, hope, and ecstacy. "Shine on benevolent Son" he says in Jambi. The phrase "breathe in union" (which he says in the same song) fits firmly in the tradition of mystical union with Christ. Only union with Christ can save and divinize a person. ("Divided I'm withering...")

And it's a very anti-drug album, which is a real departure for TOOL. Both POT and ROSETTA STONED are attacks on people who use drugs to try to have cool visions, which is exactly what TOOL used to do. ROSETTA STONED is hilarious, about a guy on drugs who thinks he's the chosen one but just ends up pissing his pants and shitting his bed.

So: If you're a vampire/ satan/ death/ pagan/ drinkyerownblood/ fryyerbrainforvisions/ type TOOL fan...this album is not for you. TOOL has left that building. Maynard is becoming a prophet before our eyes. It's hilarious, reading people on the web who can't believe this has happened...Samson is pushing over your pillars.

Just before listening to the album, I prayed that Maynard would be taking steps toward Christ. He is. Unbelievable. Life is good. And strange.

I remember back when "Maynard's Dead" was released, we all thought it was symbolic of his death and being born again, as rumors were going around that he had turned to Christ. Of course, we later found out the song title was actually "Maynard's Dick", and we all had a good laugh.

Later, on Lateralus, one of the first things I noticed (other than it's awesome sound) was that there wasn't a single foul word on the album. I couldn't help but wonder what Tool was up to. Later, a friend pointed out something special in the brain matter of the album art (you know, the kick ass, translucent insert where you can peel back layers of the human). The word "God" was clearly inscribed in the brain.

I heard "Vicarious" on the radio today, and was like OMG, a new Tool album!? I began wondering how they could top their previous album's art. After a long drive back to my university, I stopped at the store to buy the album (10000 Days). Needless to say, I bought it and I'm impressed. The lyrics have a distinctly Christian message. I am both not surprised and also very surprised. I keep reading the lyrics trying to figure out if I am being tricked, but after hearing "Right in Two", I was deeply moved. I know these guys understand the message that Christ had given to the world... monkeys killing monkeys... over pieces of the ground. Life is too short to hold a grudge. Nice Job TOol!
